Thesis:
The Education System has failed students
Universities are teaching subjective truth, which makes people ignorant to what is really true
Summarize Nielsen's (Bloom’s) opinion of “higher” education. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Why? (If you have no knowledge of colleges and universities, think about the public school system, which Nielsen also criticizes. What is your opinion of that? Why?)
Nielsen believes that "higher" education is letting us, the students, down badly because universities and schools are not offering students pathways to "the good life" of wisdom and virtue. I agree with Nielsen's argument because "higher" education only focuses on training students to become doctors, engineers, and other professions instead of teaching them the way of living and exposing students to other things, such as the arts. Teaching and exposing students to various curricula educate and prepare us for the real world, which universities should also focus on.
At post-secondary institutions, “the sciences” include subjects such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Geography while the arts, or Humanities, are subjects such as English, French, History, and Philosophy. Why would Nielsen (Bloom) argue that students should take both arts and sciences? Defend your answer with evidence from the essay.
Nielsen argues that students should take both the arts and sciences to expand their knowledge and educate themselves, making them well-rounded individuals. Education and knowledge are powerful, which Nielsen is trying to point out. It enables people to find morals and values to the meaning of a "good life," which "higher" education does not do. "A good program of liberal education," he says, 'feeds the students love of truth and passion to live a good life.'" It also prepares students to develop educated answers when tackling significant issues and topics, such as abortion, instead of being influenced by what other people believe.
