Related to Math?

After watching 14 Peaks, one major thing was connected to math, which was estimating the amount of time required to travel to all 14 biggest mountains in the world and dividing the amount of time needed to peak all 14 mountains. Nims, the protagonist, gave himself seven months to complete Project Possible. Time is of the essence, and to ensure that he would climb and peak all 14 mountains within seven months, Nims used math to devise a strategy. He decided to climb the mountains in three phases. The first phase was climbing in Nepal; the second phase was in Pakistan; the last phase was in Tibet/China. With his brilliant strategy by using math and his strong mindset, Nims climbed and peaked all of the 14 biggest mountains in the world in just six months.

Anything Thought Provoking?

14 Peaks is one of my favourite documentaries I have watched because of the challenges Nims had to face, how he overcame them, and how he inspired me to never give up on anything. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving me in suspense when dealing with life or death situations, happy when he celebrated and had fun with his family and team, and relieved when he overcame challenges that seemed impossible. Despite people not believing in him, Nims never gave up on his dream of peaking all 14 mountains. Even in the most frightening moments when climbing, he decided to keep going. For example, Nims could have died from the low oxygen levels and the cold, harsh environment after experiencing high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) after giving his oxygen tank to another climber. In addition, he slipped and fell 100m before he caught a rope. These moments would have stopped me from completing Project Possible, but Nims never gave up.

What is truly inspiring is that he kept a positive mindset throughout his entire journey by saying, “I can do this,” and, “I’m not going to die.” His mindset allowed him to survive and fully commit to his dream. Nothing stopped him, including people who doubted him. When Nims arrived at K2, the second largest mountain in the world, Nims saw the fear in the other climbers’ eyes. He tried convincing them to climb with him, but they decided to stay on the ground. Despite what the other climbers felt, Nims chose to go ahead and reach the top of K2. What is amazing is that 24 climbers summited K2 in 2 days the next day after Nims peaked K2. Without Nims and his team, they would have given up to fear and never climbed that mountain. I realized that no matter how difficult something may seem, there will always be a way to overcome it, as long as you are focused and committed.
