The Great Gatsby is a phenomenal book that everyone should read because it shows what life was like in the Roaring 20s and teaches people about the American dream. After reading the book, I could envision how people would spend most of their time. The wealthy would go to parties and drink all day long, while those living in poverty barely survived as life was harsh for them. However, everyone wanted to just relax since World War 1, and the Spanish Flu pandemic had ended. Moreover, the book shows how the American Dream, the desire to be successful, is unattainable for most people. The reality is that most dreams cannot come true, which was shown through Jay Gatsby, the protagonist of the novel. Gatsby's goal was to live with Daisy, the girl of his dreams. And like the American Dream, Gatsby believed that living with Daisy was the key to success. However, the universe had other plans for him, and spoiler alert, he does not end up getting her. The book is trying to remind us, the readers, to be grateful for what we already have because we can lose ourselves and those around us if we continue to chase for something we know we cannot achieve.

Moreover, my class and I watched the movie, which further developed my understanding of what life was like in the past because of all the visuals, sceneries, and acting (Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and the other actors were phenomenal).
