Security vs. Freedom

In our Grade 12 AP English class, we discussed about whether we should sacrifice our freedom for more security. In other words, would you want the government to spy on you daily, ensuring your safety or eradicate surveillance as it violates people's privacy? Initially, many people voted that we should eradicate surveillance to some extent; however, the origins as to why security has increased was due to the 9/11 bombings. Governments around the world increased security by increasing the number of cameras in public and listening to people's conversations on their cellphones in hopes to prevent any bombings and organized crimes related to 9/11 from happening. After learning as to why security has increased, many people have switched and decided to increase security instead.

I still believe that the government should not be spying on us, whether it is through facial recognition through cameras in public/webcams or listen to our conversations through our cellphones because people, including myself, do not want to be anxious all the time. We do not want to feel that someone is watching or listening to us without us even knowing. It an uncomfortable thought to have.
